Lace

Review: Lace is a powerful novel by Shirley Conran. It is about the strength of character and the importance of friendship. It has a racy plot, nevertheless, evolves with fascinating development in Conran's characters. Four girls - Kate, Maxine, Judy and Pagan - in an exclusive Swiss finishing school forge friendship that bind them together for the all their lives. The reader watches them develop, as they mature from the adventurous girls to successful and famous women. The friends bring out the best in each other. They have their own shortcomings, individual fears and anxieties, but together, they can go through anything, bundled by determination and strength. Lace is also the story of Lili, who is fostered at birth by her 15-year-old mother and passed from family to family. The reader's hearts are mellowed and touched as her simple innocence is shattered, when at the age of 13 she becomes dominated by a manipulative man. Despite it all, Lili remains unaffected, her positive and hopeful spirit intact. The unpredictable climax of Lace enthralls.
