White Fang

Review: White Fang, a novel by Jack London set in the cold North, narrates the story of a fighting dog captured in the wild. It begins with two sled travellers carrying a dead man for burial who are followed by a wolf pack led by a runaway husky. The pack kill off and devour the team of sled dogs one by one, and gets one of the teamsters, his companion is rescued. Left in the wild, the males of the pack fight for the right to mate with the husky. A cunning wolf, One-eye, wins. Out of their coupling, White Fang is born, named by the native hunter who found him. A severe famine helps transform White Fang into a marvellous creature of destruction, able to fight and kill other dogs due to his remarkable agility and cunning. Captured by the white man, White Fang is made to fight his own kind in illegal dog fights where he quickly establishes his supremacy. At length he is pitted against a bulldog: White Fang is caught in the bulldog's powerful jaws and almost choked to death. He is rescued by a lawman who takes him home and tries to befriend him. Tamed after so much efforts, he is taken by his new master to the states. White Fang saves his master from a killer but he is shot and given up for dead. The wolf-dog survives and is reunited with his dog partner and the puppies he has sired.
